Matty Gaffney (1919-2007) was born in Killeshandra, County Cavan, and lived there all his life. His father Martin Gaffney, was the headmaster of the local national school and his mother Rose (Dolan) Gaffney, ran the family ladies and gents drapery business on Main Street. Matty was involved in many local groups including sport, drama, fishing, traditional Irish music, history, town development and more which all provided a rich source of lore that contributed to his lifelong interest in recording local history and traditions. He also helped to establish Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Éireann and was Secretary of the first Fleadh in Killeshandra in 1956.
Life Recorded contains a series of short pieces and recollections, each with Matty’s own unique insight into the ways of the world in which he lived, as well as historical accounts related to the Killeshandra area. Matty used an old box camera won at a local sports meeting to take many of the photographs in the book. Life Recorded, is edited and designed by his son Martin Gaffney.
