A traditional music journey 1600 – 2000 from Erris to Mullaghban
Maire Nic Domhnaill Gairbhi

“I was determined to do this project and connect the tradition in Mayo with South Armagh. It has been the nmost exciting time of my life. Being from Connacht, I realised that this province has always been ‘the poor relation’ for quite a long time. But there have been hidden cultural activities down through the years in the midst of poverty, hardship, oppression and neglect. Not only in Connacht but right across the country to Sliabh Gullion, Mullaghban, and across to the Long Woman’s Grave in Oriel, the traditional music thrived without the help of modern technology. There was an affinity with each other when the men from the West walked their cattle from Mayo, Roscommon, Sligo and Leitrim across the land of no borders, to load them for export on the cattle boats of Greenore. Those were days of hardship and achievement.”
