The most exciting and innovative news on the Irish music scene is happening right here in Gurteen Co. Sligo. The Coleman Music Centre opens their brand new exhibition and information space in April 2009 at Ceoláras Coleman, Gurteen, Co. Sligo. In this purpose built facility, there are listening posts, display boards, interactive kiosk, quizzes and a stunning audio-visual presentation.
This audio visual is the very first thing you see when you visit. It sets the tone for the whole project, showing and illustrating a history of traditional Irish music and the musical instruments themselves.
In the beautifully laid out exhibition area, you will find areas devoted to the music and musical styles of Sligo, Mayo, Roscommon, Leitrim, Fermanagh and the U.S.A. This is a wide but fascinating spectrum laid out with displays and interactive kiosks. Throughout the exhibition you will learn about the style and structure of Irish music. You will see and learn about the instruments used in traditional Irish music.
A further kiosk is dedicated to sean nós singing. Here you will hear some of the masters sing the most beautiful unaccompanied songs in English and as Gaeilge.
There is a comprehensive digital archive of photographs, spanning a period of half a century where important music events, musicians and personalities are captured for posterity.
The final kiosk deals with dancing and dancing instruction. If you are brave enough, it is located in a small area with a floor suitable for trying out your expertise in all the various styles and tempos, including sean nós so make sure to bring your dancing shoes when you visit.
There is a self contained, fully equipped recording studio, which can be booked or used by individuals and groups who wish to record for their own pleasure or on a commercial basis.
So keep an eye on our website for the exact details of when the exhibition will be open. We look forward to seeing you all there.
